Bill Moggridge: 1943-2012

September 17, 2012

On Saturday, September 8th, 2012, a giant of the design world passed away after a battle with cancer. Bill Moggridge was co-founder of the ground-breaking multi-disciplinary design studio IDEO, wherein he and his team were pioneers of interaction design and was among the first designers to employ human factors in the design process. He is credited as the designer of the first laptop computer, the GRiD Compass, designed in 1979 and released in 1982.

Most recently, Bill was the director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, where he actively continued his passion for advocating the integral role of design in everyday life:

Few people think about it or are aware of it. But there is nothing made by human beings that does not involve a design decision somewhere.

He will be missed.
